CS2 Video Settings Guide
Why Video Settings Matter
In CS2, video settings directly impact both performance (FPS) and competitive advantage (visibility). Higher FPS means smoother gameplay and lower input lag, while certain visual settings affect how easily you can spot enemies.
Resolution
Resolution is the most debated video setting. Three main choices:
| Resolution | Aspect Ratio | Pro Usage | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1920x1080 | 16:9 | ~25% | Full FOV, sharp image | Lower FPS, smaller models |
| 1280x960 | 4:3 stretched | ~55% | Wider player models, higher FPS | Reduced FOV |
| 1024x768 | 4:3 stretched | ~15% | Maximum FPS, largest models | Blurry, very narrow FOV |
Most popular: 1280x960 stretched is used by the majority of professional players. The stretched 4:3 aspect ratio makes player models appear wider, which some players find easier to aim at. The trade-off is reduced peripheral vision.
Key Graphics Settings
Global Shadow Quality: Medium or High
Shadows reveal enemy positions before you can see the player model. Never set this to Low — you lose a significant information advantage. Medium provides enough shadow detail with good performance.
Model/Texture Detail: Low or Medium
Minimal visual impact on gameplay. Lower settings free up VRAM and GPU resources. Most pros use Low.
Shader Detail: Low
Affects surface reflections and visual effects. Lower settings slightly improve visibility in some situations and boost FPS.
Multisampling Anti-Aliasing: 4x or 8x MSAA
Smooths jagged edges, making enemies easier to spot at distance. The performance cost is moderate. Most pros use 4x as a balance between quality and FPS.
Boost Player Contrast: Enabled
Adds a subtle brightness boost to player models, making them stand out against backgrounds. Nearly all pros enable this — it's a free visibility advantage with zero performance cost.
Launch Options
Add these to your Steam launch options for CS2:
-novid -tickrate 128 -freq 240
- -novid: Skips the intro video for faster loading
- -tickrate 128: Sets offline server tickrate to 128
- -freq [monitor Hz]: Forces your refresh rate (match to your monitor: 144, 240, 360)
FPS Guidelines
- Minimum playable: 60 FPS (not competitive)
- Competitive minimum: 144 FPS (match 144Hz monitor)
- Ideal: 240+ FPS (matches high-refresh monitors, lower input lag)
- Pro standard: 300-500+ FPS on 240/360Hz monitors
If your FPS is below your monitor's refresh rate, lower your resolution and graphics settings. FPS above your monitor refresh rate still reduces input lag.
