IEM Cologne 2026 Confirmed as Next CS2 Major with $1.25M Prize Pool

The next CS2 Major Championship has been confirmed, and it's heading to one of esports' most iconic venues. IEM Cologne 2026 will take place from June 2 to June 21 at the LANXESS arena in Cologne, Germany, with 32 teams competing for a $1.25 million prize pool.

Cologne Returns as Major Host

This marks the first time Cologne has hosted a CS Major since ESL One Cologne 2016, which saw SK Gaming lift the trophy in one of the most memorable grand finals in Counter-Strike history. The LANXESS arena — with a capacity of up to 20,000 spectators — has long been considered the spiritual home of competitive Counter-Strike, and its return as a Major venue has been met with widespread excitement from fans and players alike.

ESL Gaming expects more than 50,000 fans to attend live across the duration of the event, making it one of the largest CS2 events ever staged.

Format and Schedule

The tournament spans nearly three weeks and follows a multi-stage format:

  • Stage 1 (June 2-5): Opening stage for lower-seeded teams
  • Stage 2 (June 8-11): Main qualifier round
  • Stage 3 (June 14-17): Legends stage — for the first time in CS history, all Stage 3 matches will be Best-of-3
  • Playoffs (June 18-21): Champions stage at LANXESS arena with full crowd

The shift to all Bo3 matches in Stage 3 is a significant format change. Previous Majors used Bo1 in the Swiss system group stages, which often led to upsets that felt unearned. The move to Bo3 should better reward consistent teams and produce more definitive results.

32 Teams, One Trophy

Thirty-two teams will compete across the three-week event. The qualification path runs through the PGL Astana 2026 closed qualifiers and regional open qualifiers. With 16 teams already invited to the closed qualifiers, the path to Cologne is becoming clearer — and more competitive — by the day.

ESL Grand Slam on the Line

Adding extra stakes, an ESL Grand Slam point will be on the line at IEM Cologne. The Grand Slam — a $1 million bonus awarded to any team that wins four ESL premier events within a 10-event span — adds another layer of motivation for the top contenders. Teams like Vitality and Natus Vincere, both currently in Grand Slam contention, will be treating Cologne as a priority.

What This Means for the Scene

The return of Cologne as a Major host signals ESL's commitment to the biggest stages for CS2's biggest moments. The LANXESS arena atmosphere is legendary — from the thunderous crowd reactions to the iconic player walk-outs — and having a Major there elevates the entire event.

For teams currently competing at BLAST Open Rotterdam and other spring events, every match now carries extra weight. Performance in these tournaments feeds directly into seeding and invitations for the Cologne Major qualifying cycle. The race to Germany starts now.

Ticket sales and detailed scheduling information are expected to be announced in the coming weeks through ESL's official channels.
