CS2 Case Opening Odds & Expected Value

Complete breakdown of CS2 case opening drop rates by rarity tier, expected value per case, and whether opening cases is profitable in 2026.

Every CS2 case opening is a randomised draw from a fixed drop table. Understanding the drop rates and expected value (EV) lets you calculate whether opening cases is profitable — spoiler: it almost never is.

Drop rates by rarity tier

StatTrak variants have ~10% chance of the roll (multiplied against the tier probability above). Souvenir versions come from Souvenir Packages, not regular case openings — different mechanic entirely.

Expected value math

A typical CS2 case opening costs ~$5 (case price ~$2.50 + key $2.50). Average return per opening across all rarity tiers is $2.20–$2.70 — meaning you lose ~$2.30–$2.80 per opening on average. Only ~5–8% of openings return more than the input cost. High-value knife/glove drops (~0.26% of openings) are the only category with meaningful upside — and even for those, you need to hit a valuable finish (Fade, Doppler Phase 4, Case Hardened Blue Gem) for the drop to be profitable.

Bottom line: opening cases is a losing bet on average. If you want a specific skin, direct-buy it from the market — you get 100% of what you pay for. Case opening is entertainment, not investment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the drop rates for CS2 knives?

Rare Special Item slot (knife or glove drop) has ~0.26% chance per case opening. Within that slot, knife shape is randomised (Bayonet, Flip Knife, Gut, M9 Bayonet, Karambit, Butterfly Knife, etc. — case-dependent), then finish is randomised (Boreal Forest, Fade, Doppler, Case Hardened, etc.), then StatTrak (~10%), then wear. Expected number of openings for a specific top-tier knife (e.g. Karambit Fade FN StatTrak): 100,000+.

Is opening CS2 cases profitable?

On average, no. Every case has negative EV of ~50–60% — for every $5 spent opening, expect ~$2.50 back on average. Rare massive drops (top-tier knives with premium finishes) can be very profitable individually, but require huge sample sizes to hit. If you enjoy the gambling aspect, treat case openings as entertainment. If you want specific skins, direct-buy.

What is the CS2 case opening EV formula?

EV = Σ (drop probability × drop market value) − (case cost + key cost). For a typical active case: EV ≈ ($0.05 × 79.9%) + ($0.30 × 16.0%) + ($8 × 3.2%) + ($50 × 0.64%) + ($400 × 0.26%) − $5 = roughly −$2.30. Discontinued cases have slightly better EV because case + drops both appreciate.

Which CS2 case has the best EV?

Historically the Bravo Case (birthplace of AK Fire Serpent) — because Fire Serpent BS trades $1,500+ and covert drops give a ~0.64% chance of a Fire Serpent. Modern case with best EV: Kilowatt Case (Kukri Knife source) if you specifically hunt Kukri Knives. But all cases still have negative EV — best EV ≠ profitable, just less negative.
