Cache Returns to CS2 Active Duty Map Pool After Seven Years

<p>Cache is officially back. With the launch of Premier Season 5 on July 6, 2026, Valve added Cache to CS2's Active Duty map pool for the first time since 2019, ending one of Counter-Strike's longest map exiles.</p><h3>The Announcement Path</h3><p>Cache's return had been telegraphed since April 29, 2026, when Valve first added the map to Competitive, Casual, Deathmatch, and Retakes rotations. That soft-launch gave players two months to test the current version before it was elevated to Active Duty. The July 6 promotion made Cache the seventh map in the professional rotation, alongside Dust2, Mirage, Inferno, Nuke, Ancient, and Anubis.</p><h3>Why Overpass Went</h3><p>Cache's promotion cost Overpass its Active Duty spot. Overpass was the least-picked map at IEM Cologne Major 2026 - tied with Nuke at just 13 total picks across Stage 3 and playoffs. Valve has not published explicit removal criteria, but the observable pattern is that the least-picked Active Duty map at the most recent Major gets rotated out. Overpass had only returned to the pool in July 2025.</p><h3>Community Reaction</h3><p>Community response was mixed. Cache supporters welcomed the return of a map long considered one of Counter-Strike's most tactically clean layouts. Overpass loyalists expressed frustration, with commentary on Reddit and X pointing to the removal being 'hated' by a segment of the player base.</p><h3>First Tier-One Test</h3><p>The first tier-one event to be played on the new seven-map configuration is BLAST Bounty on July 21, 2026, giving analysts and teams the first professional data on how veto behavior shifts with Cache back in the mix. FACEIT is also expected to update its map pool to align with Valve's rotation.</p>
