Cologne's LANXESS Arena — the beating heart of European esports events for over a decade — welcomed the IEM Cologne Major 2026 playoffs starting June 18. It was the first time the venue hosted CS2 Major playoffs, extending its status as one of the sport's most iconic stages.
The Venue
The LANXESS Arena seats approximately 20,000 spectators. It has hosted IEM Cologne events since 2015, first as regular Intel Extreme Masters stops and now as the culmination of Valve's Major cycle. Home teams like BIG have played on the stage many times, and the crowd atmosphere at the LANXESS is considered legendary in the sport.
Stage 3 at Palladium
Interestingly, the Cologne Major kept Stages 1-3 at the smaller Palladium venue, only moving to LANXESS for the playoffs. This was a deliberate choice — Palladium's more intimate setup gives Stage matches a bootcamp-plus-live-crowd feel, while LANXESS delivers the arena spectacle for the playoffs.
Sold-Out Playoffs
All four playoff sessions — June 18, 19, 20, and 21 — sold out. Fans traveled from across Europe (and further) for the chance to see the tournament's climax in person. Ticket resales in secondary markets reached 4-5x face value for the grand final.
Broadcast Setup
ESL invested heavily in the broadcast production, with drone shots, augmented-reality overlays, and expanded desk analysis segments. Regional co-streams were an official part of the setup, with commentators for eight+ languages given official access.
