The IEM Cologne Major 2026 got underway on June 2 at the Palladium, with eight best-of-one opening round matches setting the Swiss format in motion for Stage 1. Sixteen teams battled for their first step toward the LANXESS Arena.

The most talked-about result was THUNDER dOWNUNDER's 13-6 upset of MIBR on Inferno. Swiss Format Reminder
Under the standard Swiss system, three wins guarantee advancement to Stage 2, three losses mean elimination, and teams are seeded into winners' and losers' brackets after each round. Round 2 splits the 8-0 group from the 0-8 group and begins the process of separating contenders from pretenders.
Stage 1 continues on June 3 with eight more first-elimination and first-qualification matches.
