The IEM Cologne Major 2026 begins tomorrow, June 2, marking the return of Counter-Strike's most prestigious tournament to the German city where Intel Extreme Masters has run for over a decade. Organized by ESL, the event brings together 32 directly invited teams from around the world to compete for a $1,250,000 prize pool.
Format Overview
The Major uses a familiar three-stage progression that CS2 fans have grown accustomed to since the transition from CS:GO:
- Stage 1 (June 2-5): 16 teams in Swiss format at the Palladium; top 8 advance
- Stage 2 (June 6-9): Stage 1 qualifiers joined by 8 more invited sides; top 8 advance
- Stage 3 (June 11-15): The remaining 16 teams face off in the first Major where every Stage 3 match is best-of-three
- Playoffs (June 18-21): Single-elimination bracket at LANXESS Arena
Top Contenders
Team Vitality enters as the world's #1 side and reigning multi-tournament champions, headlined by superstar AWPer Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut. Team Spirit, led by Danil "donk" Kryshkovets, come in as another Tier-1 favorite. Team Falcons arrive with a brand-new roster centered on IGL Finn "karrigan" Andersen, who joined from FaZe in April, alongside NiKo, m0NESY, TeSeS, and kyousuke.
Notable Absence
For the first time since 2016, FaZe Clan will miss a Major. Their VRS points campaign collapsed after losing 1-2 to BIG in the HLC Belgrade PRO grand final in April, ending a 16-Major streak dating back to MLG Columbus 2016.
Prize Pool Distribution
The champion walks away with $500,000, second place gets $170,000, semifinalists split $160,000, and every team qualifying for Stage 3 is guaranteed at least $20,000.
