ESL released the opening-round pairings for Stage 1 of IEM Cologne Major 2026 on May 20, thirteen days before the Major's June 2 kickoff at the LANXESS arena. Stage 1 — the Challengers stage — is a 16-team Swiss bracket where eight teams advance to Stage 2 (Legends) and eight go home. Pairings were generated from the regional ranking input fed back to Valve after the RMR cycle closed earlier in May.
Stage 1 opening matches
The eight opening matches: paiN vs FlyQuest, Lynn Vision vs Nemiga, BetBoom vs Imperial, GamerLegion vs 3DMAX, ECSTATIC vs SINNERS, Wildcard vs B8, Metizport vs Chinggis Warriors, and HEROIC vs M80. Notable read: paiN drew the strongest Americas opener available — FlyQuest are the team that ended JOTA's playoff hopes at IEM Atlanta — while ECSTATIC vs SINNERS is two debutants meeting in their first-ever Major map.
What's at stake in the Swiss
Of the 16 sides in Stage 1, three are first-Major debutants (SINNERS, Chinggis Warriors, Wildcard), and two more (Lynn Vision, Nemiga) have a single prior appearance each. The Swiss format means a 3-0 start locks a Stage 2 seed, while 0-2 sides drop into elimination matches from round three onward. Recent Swiss-stage history at Majors has favored 2-1 or 3-1 qualification paths over 3-0 runs — only six teams have gone undefeated through a Major Swiss in CS2 history.
Stage 1 schedule and broadcast
Stage 1 runs June 2-5 (four days, two best-of-one rounds per day plus the bo3 qualification matches on day four). ESL confirmed the studio production stays in Cologne for all three stages — Stage 1 and Stage 2 broadcast from the ESL Cologne studio with the LANXESS arena reserved for the Stage 3 Champions bracket starting June 17. The day-one broadcast begins at 10:00 CEST with paiN-FlyQuest as the headline opener.
The eight Stage 2 (Legends) seeds awaiting their Stage 1 opponents are Vitality, NAVI, Spirit, Falcons, MOUZ, FURIA, Aurora, PARIVISION, and The MongolZ — minus one slot, since Spirit's PGL Astana title and NAVI's IEM Atlanta sweep both feed into the same Legends pool. The Legends-bracket pairing reveal follows on June 5 once Stage 1 closes.
