About AWP | Gungnir
The AWP | Gungnir is the most expensive non-Souvenir AWP in regular case-drop circulation. Released in March 2020 as part of the Norse Collection alongside Operation Shattered Web, the Gungnir takes its name from Odin's mythical spear in Norse mythology and is widely considered the most ornate AWP design ever produced. Currently trading at $14,500+ in Factory New, the Gungnir has cemented its position as the trophy AWP for collectors who already own a Dragon Lore.
Design
The Gungnir features intricate Norse runic engravings, knotwork patterns, and serpent imagery in metallic gold and silver tones across a deep midnight-blue base. The level of detail is unusually high for a CS skin — closer to museum jewelry than weapon paint. The artist (Workshop creator Romaks) drew inspiration from Viking-era artifacts and Old Norse art, with motifs that reward close inspection. Specific runes on the receiver spell out variations of "victory" and "wisdom" in Elder Futhark.
Supply & Drop Rate
Gungnir drops only from the Norse Collection, distributed during Operation Shattered Web (November 2019 to March 2020). The Norse case is a "discontinued operation case" and is no longer added to drop pools. Active supply is estimated at ~5,500 specimens across all wears, with Factory New examples making up roughly 6% — approximately 330 worldwide. This makes the Gungnir's FN supply one of the tightest in the AWP market.
Comparison to Dragon Lore
The Gungnir-vs-Dragon-Lore debate is central to AWP collecting:
- Aesthetic ceiling: Most collectors agree Gungnir is technically more ornate
- Cultural status: Dragon Lore wins on iconic status from esports moments
- Scarcity: Dragon Lore (~4,200 estimated) vs Gungnir (~5,500) — both extremely rare
- Price: Gungnir FN ($14,500) currently above Dragon Lore FN ($13,100) — a recent inversion driven by Gungnir's lower FN supply
The 2025-2026 Gungnir-over-Dragon-Lore inversion mirrors the Sapphire-over-Ruby shift seen on knives. Mature collectors are increasingly valuing artistic complexity over esports-driven cultural fame.
Float Pattern Premiums
Sub-0.005 float Gungnir FNs sell for $17,000-$19,000 (a 17-30% premium). Pattern variations are subtle but noticeable on close inspection — particular seeds produce more visually balanced runic arrangements on the magazine and stock. Top-pattern specimens have been bid up by collectors specifically photographing them for showcase displays.
Investment Outlook
Through 2025-2026, Gungnir has appreciated +21% per year — outpacing both Dragon Lore (+9%) and the broader AWP segment. The supply asymmetry (slightly more Gungnirs but much fewer FN) gives it unique upside. For collectors building toward a "trophy AWP" position, current Gungnir FN pricing remains compelling despite the recent run.
