About M4A4 | Howl
The M4A4 | Howl is the only skin in CS2 to ever be reclassified by Valve from Covert to Contraband tier — a one-of-a-kind designation marking that the skin was removed from active drop pools and will never re-enter circulation. Released in May 2014 in the Huntsman Collection, the Howl became Counter-Strike's most controversial item just weeks later when Valve discovered the artwork had been plagiarized from Deviantart artist "sic1". Rather than redesign the skin, Valve made the unprecedented decision to halt all future drops, freezing supply at the existing inventory. Every Howl in circulation today is from those first weeks of 2014.
Design
The Howl features a snarling wolf head in white and red on a black background, with the iconic open-mouth profile dominating the receiver and stock. The composition is unusually graphic for a CS skin — closer to a tattoo design or band logo than typical weapon paint. The original Deviantart submission "Howling Wolf" was created by sic1 in 2010; Valve's contracted designer adapted it without crediting or licensing the original work, leading to the eventual takedown.
Supply: The Frozen Pool
Total Howl supply is estimated at ~30,000-35,000 specimens across all wear conditions worldwide. FN specimens make up roughly 5%; StatTrak FN about 0.5% (~150-200 worldwide). This frozen-supply dynamic gives the Howl a unique market characteristic: prices can only go in one direction long-term, because new supply cannot be created and old supply is occasionally destroyed (lost accounts, scams, traded into knife collections that get sold off, etc.).
Crafting Substrate
The Howl is the most popular substrate for high-end sticker crafts in CS history. Stewie2K's $2.41M Howl 4x Foil Titan Katowice 2014 (sold April 2026) set the all-time CS2 transaction record. Other notable crafts include the $1.2M anonymous 4x Foil Titan and various 4x Holo Reason Gaming variants in the $145K-$300K range. The Howl's clean black-and-red color palette photographs particularly well with Foil and Holo stickers, making it the canonical craft host.
Wear Tier Pricing
Standard (non-StatTrak) FN Howls trade at ~$7,600. MW at ~$2,560, FT at ~$1,400, WW at ~$950, BS at ~$680. The premium ratio between FN and BS is unusually wide because the wolf design's white background degrades visibly with wear — a Battle-Scarred Howl looks markedly different from a Factory New one.
Why It's Iconic
The Howl is the rarest skin in CS history because of its origin story, not its drop rate. It is the only skin tied to a specific moment of platform-developer accountability — Valve choosing artist rights over their own merchandise. For that reason, the Howl carries a meaning beyond design: it represents Counter-Strike's complicated relationship with the workshop community.
