The rest day is here, but the biggest structural change in Major format history looms just around the corner. When Stage 3 of the IEM Cologne Major 2026 opens on June 11, every match — from the opening round to the final qualification game — will be a best-of-three.
Why This Matters
Previous Majors used best-of-one Swiss matches for early stages, with best-of-three reserved for elimination and qualification games. Community feedback consistently pointed to the same issue: best-of-one exposed favorites to too much variance from unlucky map picks, individual off-days, or opponent pistol streaks.
By making every Stage 3 match best-of-three, ESL and Valve aim to produce a Stage 3 winner-set that better reflects the actual strength of teams. In principle, no favorite can be knocked out on a single bad map.
The Stage 3 Field
Sixteen teams sit in the pool:
Direct invitees: Vitality, Falcons, Aurora, NAVI, MongolZ, MOUZ, FURIA, PARIVISION.
Stage 2 qualifiers: FUT, Team Spirit, G2 Esports, BetBoom, 9z, Monte, B8, Legacy.
The Bracket Reality
Eight teams advance to the playoffs at the LANXESS Arena. Eight will go home from the Palladium. Given the depth of the field, virtually every Stage 3 match is a headline-worthy contest.
Title Odds Reset
With Vitality still the world #1 and Spirit clearly the second-hottest side, most bookmakers had those two as co-favorites. But Falcons, with karrigan's new leadership, moved into the top three of many odds boards over the rest day. FURIA and Aurora rounded out the top five.
Coming Up
Day 1 of Stage 3 (June 11) features seven marquee opening matches, including NAVI vs Spirit, Falcons vs G2, and Aurora vs Monte. It's the deepest single day of CS2 the sport has ever produced.
