NiKo Finally Wins Major on 19th Attempt at IEM Cologne 2026

The wait is over. Nikola "NiKo" Kovač is finally a Major champion. The Bosnian superstar lifted the trophy at the IEM Cologne Major 2026 after 18 previous unsuccessful Major campaigns, ending arguably the most notable trophy drought in Counter-Strike history.

The Numbers Behind the Drought

NiKo had reached Major playoffs with Mousesports, FaZe Clan, and G2 Esports over the years without ever lifting the trophy. Notable near-misses included:

  • ELEAGUE Boston 2018 — FaZe lost the final to Cloud9 in triple OT on Inferno
  • PGL Stockholm 2021 — G2 fell short in semifinals
  • StarLadder Budapest Major 2025 — FaZe lost the grand final

Nineteen attempts. One trophy. Cologne 2026 finally.

The Path to Falcons

NiKo joined Team Falcons in 2024 during the organization's Tier-1 pivot. The roster went through revisions before landing on the winning combination in April 2026 when karrigan arrived to replace kyxsan.

NiKo's Cologne Performance

Across the playoffs, NiKo delivered:

  • 52-kill quarterfinal against Vitality (m0NESY's stat line but NiKo was crucial too)
  • Steady semifinal against Spirit
  • Grand final: multiple round-defining clutches on the CT side

His Reaction

The visible emotional release on stage was the human moment of the tournament. Nine years of near-misses ended at once. karrigan and zonic — his former FaZe teammates and coach — were on the winning side with him.

Historic Weight

NiKo is often listed among the top-5 CS players of all time based on individual skill and consistency. Cologne 2026 puts the trophy on the resume he arguably deserved years earlier.
