The M4A4 | Howl is the only "Contraband"-classified skin in Counter-Strike 2. Originally released as a covert-tier finish in the Huntsman Collection in May 2014, it was reclassified as Contraband in August 2014 after an artist filed a DMCA claim over the original wolf-head design. Valve removed it from the drop pool and it has never been re-added — no new Howls have entered circulation for over a decade.

Existing Howls in the wild form a permanently frozen supply. As demand grows and skins are lost (through wear-out, trade-hold expirations, market attrition), the Howl price climbs. It has appreciated from $200 in 2015 to over $8,000 in Field-Tested today — the strongest long-term performer in the CS2 skin market.

M4A4 Howl exists in all standard wears (Factory New through Battle-Scarred), plus StatTrak. There are no Souvenir Howls because the skin was pulled from the drop pool before any Souvenir Huntsman Case dropped at a Major.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is an M4A4 Howl in 2026?

Battle-Scarred Howl trades $7,000–9,500; Well-Worn runs $8,500–12,000; Field-Tested clears $9,000–15,000; Minimal Wear reaches $18,000–28,000; Factory New examples sell for $25,000–40,000+. StatTrak Howl adds a 40–70% premium in every wear.

Why is the M4A4 Howl called Contraband?

Contraband is a unique classification Valve created specifically for the Howl. When the DMCA claim was filed in August 2014, Valve removed the original Howl art, replaced it with a new hand-designed howling-wolf finish, and reclassified all pre-DMCA Howls as "Contraband" — a status shared with no other skin. It is the only skin in CS2 that cannot be crafted, traded up, or dropped.

Can I still get an M4A4 Howl?

Only through the secondary market — Steam Community Market listings, Skinport, Waxpeer, CS.Trade, or peer-to-peer trades. No M4A4 Howl has entered circulation since August 2014. Beware of scams: fake Howls (people trying to pass off the current M4A4 finish as a Howl) are a persistent problem — always verify through the item inspect link.

Is the M4A4 Howl a good investment?

The M4A4 Howl is the best long-term performer in the CS2 skin market. From $200 in 2015 to $8,000+ in 2026 = 40x appreciation over 11 years. Downside: illiquidity (expect 2–4 weeks time-to-sell at fair asking price) and high absolute entry price. Best held as a long-term collectible, not a short-term trade.
