CS2 May 1 Patch: Cache Map Polish, Aimpunch Capped at 90°, Counter-Strafe Hand-Popping Fix

Valve published a Counter-Strike 2 update on May 1, 2026, focused on polishing the recently reworked Cache map and resolving several gameplay and technical bugs that had accumulated since the late-April patches. The notes are short on the surface but include one meaningful gameplay clamp — aimpunch is now capped at 90 degrees — that has implications for high-damage exchanges.

What changed in practice

Cache polish

Cache returned to the active duty pool earlier this year. Players had logged a long list of remaining edge cases — bombs becoming unreachable in specific corners, shadow flicker on certain angles, surface sounds that played the wrong material when stepping on box-stack tops. The May 1 patch addresses the bulk of these without any layout-altering changes. If you have been holding off on practicing Cache because of these bugs, this is the build to load up.

Aimpunch capped at 90°

This is the most player-relevant change in the notes. Before May 1, sustained damage during a pistol or rifle exchange could rotate your view past 90 degrees off-target — visually disorienting and effectively unrecoverable in the same engagement. The 90-degree cap means worst-case aimpunch still throws your crosshair to a hard ceiling but doesn't spin you past it. Practically: prefiring an Awper who has lit you up first becomes incrementally more recoverable; the multiple-pellet shotgun-vs-armor exchange is the most affected bucket.

Counter-strafe + grenade hand bug

The "hand popping" bug occurred when a player switched to a grenade and then quickly tap-counter-strafed — the third-person hands would visually jolt for one or two frames. Cosmetic in 1v1 but distracting on high-refresh displays and a tiny visual tell on streams. Resolved.

Older GPU stability

The "Failed to on-demand compile shader" fatal-error crash had been surfacing intermittently on older AMD and Intel integrated GPUs since the April 27 build. The fix should restore stability for players still on hardware below the recommended specification.

What is not in this patch

No weapon balance changes. No anti-cheat changes called out in the notes. No Premier matchmaking adjustments. The competitive meta — M4A1-S dominance, Galil under-utilization on T-side eco — is unchanged.

How to grab the update

The update auto-applies through Steam. Reported download size: ~250-380 MB depending on region. After applying, Premier and Competitive queues are unchanged; ranked progression is not affected.
